Getting a text when a fax arrives

How to turn on text notifications, what they can and cannot say, and how to stop them.

Open Settings → Notifications and add your mobile number. VitalFax texts a six-digit code to it; enter the code and text notifications are on for your number only.

Text messages are off until you do this. Nobody else can turn them on for you, including an administrator — the number has to answer its own code, which is what proves the handset is yours.

What you will receive

Exactly three messages, and nothing else:

- A fax arrived. "VitalFax: a new fax has arrived. Sign in to view it." - A fax could not be delivered. "VitalFax: a fax you sent could not be delivered. Sign in to review and retry." - Your account's security changed. "VitalFax: a security-relevant change was made to your account. Sign in to review it."

Those are the messages in full. They are fixed text with nothing inserted into them, so no sender name, document title, fax number or patient detail can appear on your lock screen. Anything with detail in it stays behind a sign-in.

How to stop them

Reply STOP to any VitalFax message. That takes effect immediately and applies everywhere, not just to the organization whose notification you received — if you work with more than one VitalFax account, all of them stop.

Nobody can turn them back on for you. Re-entering your number in Settings will not do it, and neither will support. Only a START reply from the same handset restores messages, which is the point of an opt-out.

You can also remove the number in Settings → Notifications. That stops the messages and withdraws the permission recorded for the number.

If the code does not arrive

Check the number, then send a new code. A code expires after ten minutes, and five wrong entries cancel it — send a fresh one rather than guessing.

If VitalFax has no text-message provider connected yet, the page says so and no code is sent. Your number is saved but stays unconfirmed, and nothing will be texted to it.

Email and in-app notifications

Both are always on and are not configurable. They follow the same rule as the texts: a notification tells you that something happened, never what it contains.

This is about /app/settings/notifications in the application. You will need to be signed in.
